The mystery surrounding the murder of Treasury agent Alan Guthrie deepens in this sequel to Charlsie Russell’s gothic, Camellia Creek.
As of January 1866, Major Seth Parker’s investigation into the Guthrie murder has been confounded by more murders and the involvement of the woman who saved Parker’s life three years earlier. Further, the Treasury Department’s suggestion Parker find a Southerner to blame, along with its refusal to confirm why Guthrie had been in Mississippi to begin with, brings Treasury’s motives into doubt.
Rebecca Mackey lost not only her young husband and unborn son to war, but her father, a brother, and a sister. Now her sole surviving sibling, Eli Calhoon, ex-CSA, is fighting for his life, the victim of an attack linking him not only to Alan Guthrie’s murder, but to a web of intrigue in the U. S. Treasury. Worse yet, the man who has set his sights on Eli Calhoon is Seth Parker, the enemy whose life she saved in 1863, a man she is loathe to trust, but who might prove her greatest ally.

The murder of a U.S. agent was a subplot to the well-loved Southern Gothic, Camellia Creek. In this long-awaited sequel, Honor's Banner, Ms. Russell mixes ingredients ripe for an intriguing follow up, laced with more sinister murder, a nefarious financial swindle, and enough romance to keep us turning the pages.Well-edited and meticulously researched, Honor's Banner is a history lover's novel, rich with the devastating political and socio-economic tribulations of the Southerner. Beyond the rich writing, however, are the familiar and well-loved characters from Camellia Creek. I've long said that no one crafts complex, nuanced, believable characters like Ms. Russell--and the fact that the represent the post-War South makes them an even bigger delight.
I can't go into the plot here without revealing spoilers, but the intrigue of this dark whodunit will keep you turning pages long into the night. And the ending was a sweet, sublime note after chapters of dark, tension. No vapid, bodice-ripper here. Honor's Banner is a suspenseful novel for the thinker, the modern Southerner, the history buff, and anyone who longs for a well-crafted novel written "like they used to".

Honor Banner edition by Charlsie Russell Nancy McDowell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I have read several of Charlsie Russell books because they were listed under HISTORICAL romance. They should not have the word Historical associated with them. True, they are suppose to be about the South after the Civil War, however, her accounts only contain a slight amount of truth and a very slanted view. There are evil people every where, including the south, but she has taken history and twisted it to make it sound like all who supported the north, anti-slavery, President Lincoln (in other words all things Northern) evil and the Southerners were all wonderful people who treat their slaves so wonderful that they continued to serve them after the War. She blames the evils of reconstruction after the Civil War on Lincoln when it was in truth, Johnson (Lincoln's Vice President) who made the south a mess after the war because he was a Southerner and he tried to make it so the Plantation owners could use Blacks to rebuild the south even though they were free, by paying little of nothing for wages and generally keep them slaves even though they were free. Blacks were murdered by the thousands in the south after the war, but she doesn't mention that at all. She writes notes to the reader in the beginning or ending of the book telling about all her research but if she did research, she translated it to her own version and trying to rewrite history. Ms. Russell reminds me of a Southerner who still thinks the South won the war and can't accept it any other way. I think her books should be taken out of the Historical section and simply put in romance. (Sick romance) They are definitely not historically accurate.
I loved Camellia Creek and this book was a great continuation of that story. Great job!! Can’t wait for more.
I waited patiently for this sequel to Charlsie Russell’s excellent post-Civil War Gothic, "Camellia Creek", and, happily, was not disappointed. The fast-paced "Honor’s Banner" takes the reader from the darker atmosphere of its prequel and focuses on the murder mystery a mere subplot in Camellia Creek, that being the unresolved killing of a U.S. Treasury agent. Steeped in history told with the forthrightness that only a Southerner immune to today’s political correctness and one eager to challenge the vilification of Southern history over the past fifty years—or, perhaps, in defiance of both—Charlsie Russell’s "Honor’s Banner" will prove enlightening to some, provocative to others, but for most readers simply a satisfying escape into our nation’s history. It is a well-crafted mystery, embellished by historical events and sweetened with romance. Another Charlsie Russell page turner. I loved this book!!
